Maine Greyhound Placement Service has a fully serviceable veterinary clinic on-site to meet the needs of the hounds in our shelter that await adoption. We call it simply, The Greyhound Clinic. With this state-of-the-art clinic we are able to provide spay/neutering services, dental work, vaccinations, microchipping, heartworm/tick testing, blood, urine, and stool analysis, and so much more. For those greyhounds that are coming in to our shelter, having the clinic at the ready tends to make their stay with us a shorter one and less stressful as we are able to address their medical needs quickly and efficiently without the dogs ever having to leave the MGPS campus. It is a pleasant 1 to 2 minute walk from the actual shelter to The Greyhound Clinic building.

Dog breeds other then greyhounds? Yes, we see them, too!

The Greyhound Clinic provides high quality yet affordable spay/neuter and dentistry services not only to the greyhounds in our care but to many other breed specific rescues as well. Despite our name, The Greyhound Clinic does not discriminate and we are more then happy to be able to help all of our canine friends on their way to eventual adoption.

How about cats?

Of course! In fact, it would probably not be an exaggeration to say that we see just as many cats here at The Greyhound Clinic as we do greyhounds. The reason being is that we have networked with several of Maine's largest humane societies and provide most, if not all of their spay/neuter and dentistry services for the dogs AND cats in their shelters. We work closely with a number of cat shelters including one that works strictly with feral cats. Our outreach is continually expanding.

Clinic Staff

We also have 3 veterinary technicians on staff that combined have nearly 50 years of technical expertise. A skilled receptionist rounds out the crew and helps to keep things organized and running smoothly. They are a friendly , caring, and experienced group of folks who are truly dedicated in their desire to provide exceptional veterinary care to all animals in need.

Clinic Features

Technologically speaking, our clinic is very handsomely outfitted. We have 3 anesthetic machines, multiple pulse oximetry units, and an anesthetic/cardiac monitor that would rival most of those found in the human medical field. We have a large laboratory that gives us the ability to conduct, among other things, complete blood cell counts, bio-chemical profiles, and blood coagulation panels. The clinic itself is new, fresh, and spacious. In addition to our lab, it includes a surgical suite, a dental suite, an exam room, a recovery area, a waiting room, and more. We are so proud of our clinic and invite you to come in and take a tour.

Did you know that Maine Greyhound Placement Service offers exceptional boarding accommodations for greyhounds (and all sighthounds) in need of a cozy and safe place to stay? Our boarders enjoy clean, comfortable and climate-controlled conditions and a whole lot of extra TLC, all in a pleasant country setting. Soothing background music plays continuously to promote a peaceful atmosphere. MGPS has its own fully serviceable veterinary clinic on site, as well as access to several area veterinarians should a medical issue arise. Our facilities are equipped with interior and exterior security cameras, closed circuit television sets, and motion detection lighting. Your pet’s safety and security are top priority here at MGPS.

All boarders are housed separately from the adoptable greyhounds in the shelter. Boarders are turned-out into a large fenced-in exercise yard in groups of four a minimum of four times a day. All greyhounds wear basket-type muzzles while out together, just to be on the safe side. MGPS provides everything for your dogs stay, up to and including food, coats, bowls, muzzles and more. Bedding and toys are thick and plentiful and all dogs are fed twice a day. If your dog has special dietary needs, you may bring your own food from home provided it is stored in an airtight plastic container with feeding instructions included. Furthermore, if your dog has a special blanket, toy or treat, you are welcome to bring those types of items, too. If your dog is on any medications, please make sure to include them in your dogs ‘luggage’.

The standard boarding fees are as follows:

  • For MGPS members, boarding is $15.00 per calendar day per dog.
  • For non-members, boarding is $20.00 per calendar day per dog.

It is so easy to become a member of MGPS and worth every penny. For a minimum donation of $25.00 you receive membership status for one year, which includes the benefits of reduced boarding fees, 4 quarterly issues of our newsletter, The Greyhound Express, and free access to our large Greyhound Park for fun and frolic. Memberships are renewable on an annual basis.

To make your dogs stay complete, MGPS also offers luxurious grooming services, all performed by our veterinary technician. The fees are as follows:

  • Bath & Ear Cleaning = $20.00
  • Nail Trim Only = $10.00
  • Anal Gland Expression = $20.00

We accept cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. The fees associated with boarding and grooming help to fund the daily care of the retired greyhounds awaiting adoption in our shelter.

We require that all dogs boarding with us are up-to-date on their Distemper/Parvo, Rabies, and Kennel Cough vaccinations and/or have titers proving antibody protection. Additionally, we require proof of a stool sample analysis (with a negative result) performed within the last year. Lastly, we ask that all dogs coming in to boarding be free of fleas and ticks. If your dog is in need of any vaccinations, we would ideally like to have them done 10 days prior to your pets stay. If this is not possible, we are able to conduct all of the above services right here at our clinic. We have flea and tick prevention (Frontline Plus, Vectra, and Capstar) available for purchase, as well.

Greyhounds have very unique requirements. Don’t let your precious dogs board just anywhere. Leave them here with us for a fun and comfortable stay. You can rest assured that your hound will be taken care of by trained folks that truly know greyhounds in every sense of the word and are familiar with all those special needs.
